A SUBTLE BEAUTY $300

This is an old statue from late 19th century. I collected it from a farmer in a small village in Norther Vietnam a few years ago. I don't know much about this status but no doubt it was hand carved from a local artisan. I admire the subtle beauty of this statue. Yes, it might not be so colorful and the texture of the lacquer not so smooth with its small break in the back of the base, but this statue has such a delicate beauty and magical aura.

BUDDHA STANDING ON A LOTUS FLOWER $250

This Vietnamese Folk Art was handcrafted from Mit wood and painted with traditional Vietnamese lacquer paint by a local artisan in Northern Vietnam. The buddha is covered in silver leaf but through the traditional lacquer technique, it becomes a gold color.

A SMALL CAMBODIAN SILVER BIRD $295

This hand pounded cutie bird was beautifully handcrafted by Cambodian silversmiths. It is a another example of the traditional Cambodian silver divided animal. And you will see a few more examples of this style (an elephant, deer, and parrot) in my next post. I promise it will be very interesting!

One of the more functional types of decorative boxes are snuff boxes, now largely a relic of the once popular practice of taking "snuff". These were once an important assessory for anyone needing to containerize betel nut, opium, balms, traditional medicines, and small jewels.

This cutie bird will be a special gift from Cambodian or an ideal for collectors of unique handicrafts.

CAMBODIAN SILVER ROOSTER $325

This rooster is divided lengthwise into two, with the head, back and tail comprising the upper section and the feet and stomach the lower half. It is hand-decorated in the traditional style of the Cambodian silversmiths. This would make a very unique gift for a lover of the Rooster.

Occupying the 10th position in the Chinese Zodiac, the Rooster symbolizes such character traits as confidence, pompousness and motivation. Those born under the Chinese Zodiac sign of the Rooster are loyal, trustworthy individuals who are blunt when it comes to offering their opinions. Their bluntness stems not from being mean but from being honest; a trait which Roosters expect from others.
Years of Rooster: 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993 and 2005.

This piece is from the early 20th century and because I want to keep it in its original condition I have not polished or cleaned the silver.  It can be easily done and I'm happy to help you with it.

BEAUTIFUL CIGARET BOX FROM CAMBODIA WITH ANGKOR TEMPLE SCENE $300

Alright, I know many of us are trying to quit smoking! However, this cigarette box is simply STUNNING! Beautiful! It is carved on all sides, as you can see in the pictures, with such careful detail. The front has an Angkor Temple scene, while the other sides have a decorative motif which is from the temple itself.

This is another example of the Cambodian silversmith expert craftsmanship. As we know, silver objects from Cambodia are among the most beautiful and interesting art objects in Southeast Asia.

VIETNAMESE FOLK ART OF A HAPPY BUDDHA'S FACE $170

Here we have a Happy Buddha's face in such a great laugh that it always makes me feel happy when I see it. That is why he is the deity of happiness, abundance, wisdom and contentment.

It is also hand carved from Mit wood and painted with traditional Vietnamese lacquer and silver leaf. Under the traditional lacquer, silver leaf becomes a gold color.

This Happy Buddha's face is ready to hang with a hook in the back, so you do not need to go to the hardware store which is cool, right!?

CAMBODIAN SILVER SMALL OVAL BOX WITH BIRD AND FLOWER $200

Cambodian silversmith are considered experts at chasing, repousse, niello, enamelling, and gilding. Therefore, silver objects from Cambodia are among the most beautiful and interesting art objects in South East Asia.

This box original was used to keep ingredients for betel chewing. Early 20th century.

VIETNAMESE YAO SHAMAN'S RITUAL MASK $250

This wooden mask was hand carved and covered with Do paper by Yao’s tribe who live in the mountains of Northern Vietnam. This mask is used in ritual ceremonies such as Taoist Priests Adorning Ceremony.
During the ceremony participants wear the masks and perform a ritual dance as a way of meeting the gods. At the end, participants - under guidance of the master - lay down in a deep cataleptic-like state. The masks are collected and participants are covered in fabric as if they were dead. They are believed to be reborn then becoming a new human. The reborn are considered “mature,” while anyone who has not been through the ceremony is forever immature and time does not age the soul.

VIETNAMESE FOLK ART STATUE OF AMITABHA BUDDHA $300

Statue of Amitabha buddha standing on a lotus. His left arm is bare and extended downward with thumb and forefinger touching and his right hand facing outward also with thumb and forefinger touching. The meaning of this mudra is that wisdom (symbolized by the raised hand) is accessible to even the lowest beings, while the outstretched hand shows that Amitabha's compassion is directed at the lowest beings, who cannot save themselves.

This statue was hand carved from Mit wood and painted with traditional Vietnamese lacquer in black, red and gold. Large face with peaceful expression.

It has a crack in the chest because it is an old statue that has traveled a very long way. East to West. Otherwise in a good condition. Prewar.

VIETNAMESE FOLK ART STATUS OF AVALOKITESVARA $320

This statue of 12 arms Avalokitesvara was hand carved from Mit wood and painted with traditional Vietnamese lacquer in red, bronze and gold. Beautiful and feminine face. In a meditative pose. Very peaceful ambience.

Original and from Hanoi, Northern Vietnam. Prewar. One arm does not match color. It's dimensions are 13"H x 12"W (arm to arm) x 6"D.

Avalokitesvara is known as Guan Yin and she is an extremely popular Goddess in Vietnamese folklore, and is worshiped in Vietnamese communities throughout South East Asia. Guan Yin is revered in the general Vietnamese population due to her unconditional love, compassion and mercy. She is generally regarded by many as the protector of women and children. By this association she is also seen as a fertility goddess capable of granting children. She is also the champion of the unfortunate, the sick, the disabled, the poor, and those in trouble. Among business people and traders, she is looked upon as a Goddess of Luck and Fortune. In recent years there have been claims of her being the protector of air travelers.
